Buying 3M Films
Understanding the 3M Film Distribution Channel
The 3M film industry includes several different product categories, customer types, and distribution rules. Because of this, it is important to understand how the channel works and which companies play which roles.
At a basic level, the 3M film channel includes four groups:
Each plays a different role.

3M: The Manufacturer
3M manufactures a wide range of film products used for automotive, architectural, decorative, energy efficiency, protective, security, and graphics applications.
These products include window films (sun control and security), paint protection films (PPF), vinyl wrap films (ex: 2080), architectural finishes (ex: DI-NOC), decorative films (ex: FASARA & Dusted Crystal), graphics films (ex: IJ180), overlaminates, ceramic coatings, and related products.
In addition to manufacturing the products, 3M sets product specifications, brand standards, warranty programs, authorization requirements, and distribution rules for its films.

Distributor: The Supply and Support Partner
A 3M distributor supplies film products to dealers and installers. Distributors help support the channel through inventory, logistics, technical support, product education, training resources, marketing support, and customer service.
Energy Products Distribution, commonly known as EPD, is a full-line 3M film distributor. This means EPD supports all 3M film categories, including building window films, automotive films, paint protection films, vinyl wrap films, decorative films, DI-NOC Architectural Finishes, graphics films, overlaminates, ceramic coatings, and installation tools. EPD purchases films from 3M and provides logistics to get the films into the hands of those companies, usually referred to as dealers, that install them for end-users.
Distributors do not perform the same role as dealers. A distributor supplies and supports the dealer network whereas a dealer installs the product for end-users.

Dealer / Installer: The Company That Works with the End-User
A dealer, often referred to as an installation company or installer, works directly with end-users.
Dealers sell and install film products for homeowners, building owners, vehicle owners, businesses, schools, government facilities, and other customer types.
For example, if a homeowner wants sun control window film installed on their house, or a business owner wants security film installed on their storefront, they work with a local authorized 3M dealer.

End-User: The Customer Receiving the Installed Product
The end-user is the person or organization that ultimately receives the installed film product.
End-users may include:
- homeowners
- building owners
- vehicle owners
- property managers
- schools
- businesses
- municipalities
- government agencies
EPD indirectly supports end-users through education, dealer referrals, and product selection.
Open Market vs. Closed Market 3M Film Products
One of the most important distinctions in the 3M film channel is the difference between open market and closed market products.
How EPD Supports the Channel
EPD supports the 3M film channel in two primary ways.
First, EPD supplies and supports dealers with 3M film products, technical resources, product education, inventory, logistics, and customer service.
Second, EPD helps generate pull-through demand for its dealer network by educating end-users and helping them find qualified local dealers through EPD's dealer locator.
