3M Introduces New Ceramic Series

3M has just introduced a new line of flat glass window films that fit between Night Vision and Prestige. Made of ceramic, these films offer slightly less infrared heat rejection than Prestige while being less visible than Night Vision. They are also made for automotive use and are positioned between Color-Stable and Crystalline.

3M Window Films Qualify for Tax Credits

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 created federal tax credits for homeowners who make certain energy efficient improvements. On October 3, 2008, President Bush signed into law the "Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008", which extended tax credits for energy efficient home improvements made in 2009. Consumers purchasing qualifying 3M Window Film products between January 1 and December 31, 2009 can receive a 2009 tax credit. Click here for a list of qualifying 3M Window Film products. A tax credit directly reduces your overall income tax, which is much better than a deduction, which reduces the amount of income subject to tax. Homeowners can receive a 30% credit on the costs of qualified window film products, up to a maximum of $1,500.

Complete IRS form 5695 and file your 2009 Income Tax Return by April 15, 2010. Download IRS form 5695 from the IRS website, along with a list of other available energy efficiency tax credits. You will need a copy of the dealer invoice for the window film product, separated by cost for film and installation. Installation costs are not eligible for the tax credit. You will also need a copy of the manufacturer's certification statement, which determines which products qualify based upon where you reside. Make sure to keep a copy of both of these documents for your records. Please consult your tax professional with any questions.

3M Window Films Achieve National Fenestration Rating Council Certification

ST. PAUL, MN - November 14, 2008 - 3M announced today that the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) has certified a range of the company's window films. These films include 3M's metal-free Prestige Series, which blocks 66% of the sun's heat streaming through windows and 99.9 percent of the ultraviolet rays. NFRC certification affirms 3M's films meet rigid energy performance factors for windows and doors and for attachment systems. Information about NFRC's labeling program can be found at http://www.nfrc.org or by viewing this document.

"Affirmation of the quality of 3M Window Films is one of the things customers seek at a time when ways to increase commercial and residential energy savings are top of mind for consumers," said Michael Hassenauer, 3M Window Film.

One way to obtain these energy savings is to apply 3M Sun Control Window Film to glass panels, either commercial or residential. Besides Prestige Series, other NFRC certified 3M window films include families of:

  • Amber Sun Control Films
  • Neutral Sun Control Films
  • Silver Sun Control Films
  • Ultra Safety/Security and Sun Control Film

3M invented window films in 1966 and since that time has called on the company's proprietary multilayer, adhesives and processing technologies to continuously improve and build a host of window films that meet the ongoing needs of today's homeowner. More information can be found at www.3m.com/windowfilm. In recognition of 3M's commitment to the environment, the company has been selected for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for eight years that tracks the performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide.

    3M Joins Clinton Climate Initiative

ST. PAUL, Minn., November 1, 2007 - 3M joined the Clinton Climate Initiative's (CCI) landmark global procurement agreement today to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by making energy savings technologies affordable and accessible to cities around the world. Under the agreement, 3M - a world leader in window films for four decades and recipient of the first patent for window films in 1966 - will sell its energy-saving window film to 40 of the world's largest cities (C40) at greater volumes and reduced costs, helping city buildings cut back on the energy they consume and associated carbon dioxide emissions.

"Climate change is a global issue that we must address immediately if we are to reverse its catastrophic effects," said President Clinton. "I am pleased that the US Conference of Mayors and many businesses are working with my foundation to supply energy efficient and clean energy products. By offering these products at a discounted rate, we can ensure that more cities and citizens have access to them and that the market for clean energy technology will grow. Together, I hope that we can have a measurable impact on greenhouse gas emissions around the world."

Five window films from 3M were invited to be part of the Initiative, based on their advanced technology that blocks the heat penetrating windows and results in less stress on air-conditioning systems and lower overall energy costs in summer months and warmer climates. Among them are two films from the Prestige series - the first clear, metal-free window films that measurably reduce the heat and UV rays that enter commercial buildings, while allowing natural light through.

The Prestige Series marks 3M's latest technological contributions to the industry. Leveraging world-class capability in nanotechnology, adhesives, multi-layer optical films and precision manufacturing, 3M has created a window film that is comprised of hundreds of layers while being less than the thickness of a Post-it Note.

What's more, commercial property owners now have high performance clear or lightly-tinted window film options that combine all the benefits of heavily tinted or reflective film without the inherent drawbacks of darkened rooms or shiny windows.

"We are honored to have been approached by the Clinton Foundation to participate in this important initiative," said Kevin Ries, division vice president of 3M Building and Commercial Services. "Our window films provide superior technology, keeping heat out, while letting natural light in. They are a cost-effective way to achieve energy savings and our qualified dealer network makes installation easy for everyone."
